How Stair Railings Are Installed...

How the aluminum rais are assembled

Stair Railings are made to the length and angle required for your project.

The length maybe divided into 6' or 8' panels depending on how the posts are mounted. Of course, just like with the regular aluminum railing panels, stair panels can be cut down to fit during installation.

Flanges can be used for panel lengths up to 6'. Panels of 7' or 8' lengths normally have to be core-drilled by code.

You should check your local building codes to see if these requirements apply.

See the Stair Angle Calculators page or the Railing Quote Form to determine length and stair angle.

Panel / Post Stair Railings...

Stair railings adjustable rail endIn the case of stairs for either the Panel / Punched Post or the Panel / Rail End system, adjustable rail ends are used for all the rails and there is no way to hide the screws for these.

However, they do provide a very easy way of installing stair railing that also provides some "forgiveness" in the stair rail angle.

Post Top Stair Railings...

Stairs work a bit differently on a Post Top railing system.  The bottom and middle rails still use the adjustable Rail Ends, but the Top Rail uses an angled connector plate and Top Rail Cap to start down the stairs.

One is pictured here. You can see how it is used by viewing the Post Top Railing Exploded View page.

Cross Over Cap used for Post Top Railing Systems
The Top Rail is mounted to the tops of the intermediate and last posts using  a Cross-Over Cap, as shown here. This allows the connector plate, barrel bolted to a post cap, to tilt at the necessary angle to hold the Top Rail.

The Top Rail is terminated with an End Cap.

Stair Rail Lengths and Angles...

Before requesting a quote, you should determine the diagonal length of any stair railings needed. It is also helpful to know the angle of the stairs.  This is not difficult to do, just see the Stair Angle Calculators page or the Railing Quote Form to determine length and stair angle.
