Measuring
is a fairly simple process...just use a tape measure or
rolling measuring wheel. For help on how to measure stair railings and stair
angles, see the Stair Angle Calculators
It is very helpful to us if you send a drawing of your railing layout showing each railing "run", stair railings and any gate openings.
Total footage, artistic ability and drawing to scale are not important!
We just would like a general layout showing simply, the length of each railing run, length of any stair rails and the width of the gate openings. With this information we will determine everything for you: the number of railing panels, the number and types of posts, etc.!
There are 3 ways to get us a drawing:
We have made available, right here, a very simple layout drawing page that you
can use to create and e-mail us a basic drawing. Just click this pencil
on the
Free Quote Form to send us the
details. Very easy and fun!!

You can do a simple hand drawn sketch like the one shown here. It doesn't
have to be neat or even to scale!! We just need to see the layout and
be able to read the measurements.
You can also use a
program such as MS Paint to create a drawing on your computer like this one. We can
accept files in any common PC image format such as .bmp, .jpg, .gif, .tif,
MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint or even some AutoCAD files.
This can be
sent to us via e-mail or fax - or even uploaded to our server by using the
Quotes
page.
Whatever method you use to send us a drawing, please round up all measurements to the nearest foot - 26' 3 1/2" should read 27' as all sections can be trimmed down to fit a shorter distance...this is the normal installation procedure.
It is important the we know the diagonal length of any stair rails and the angle at which they slope.
We show you two different ways of measuring these things on the Stair Angle Calculators page. The Calculators are also provided right on the Railing Quote form page for your convenience.
Unlike fence panels, gate openings should be specified in feet or inches as necessary (fractions are OK for gates, for example: 49 1/2" or 50 3/4") and must be the size of the opening to be filled from inside of post to inside of post, not the size of the gate, like this:

The actual gate will always be made a bit smaller than the opening to allow for the hinges and latches.
